Renewable developer FRV is progressing more than 1GW/5GWh of battery energy storage projects in Spain, with the portfolio expected to reach ready-to-build status between 2026 and 2027.
The company said the advanced-stage pipeline spans Extremadura, Andalusia, Catalonia and Cantabria, combining hybrid solar-plus-storage schemes with standalone battery systems.
Extremadura is set to anchor the expansion, including the San Serván 220 complex (56MW/225MWh) and the Solanilla project (18MW/72MWh), both targeted to be ready to build in the first quarter of 2026 following approval of Royal Decree 997/2025.
FRV added that the Carmonita cluster and the planned hybridisation at San Serván 400 together represent 652MW/3492MWh of hybrid capacity in the region.
In Andalusia, the developer plans to hybridise its Alcores projects in Seville with 57MW/285MWh of storage capacity.
The company is also advancing 334MW/1336MWh across six battery facilities in Catalonia, located in Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona. In northern Spain, the 50MW/200MWh Santander BESS Camarreal project in Camargo, Cantabria, is scheduled to begin construction in the second quarter of 2026.
“The combination of hybrid projects and stand-alone storage systems will allow us to maximize the performance of our infrastructure, provide greater flexibility to the electricity system, and ensure a more stable and resilient supply,” said Fernando Salinas, managing director of FRV Iberia.
“This strategy reflects our vision to lead the energy transition through advanced technological solutions that not only optimize the use of energy resources but also strengthen our contribution to the development of a more sustainable and efficient energy model,” he added.
