Fortis Renewable Energy has signed a mandate letter with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to explore potential financing for the 270-MWp Sremska Mitrovica solar plant and associated 72-MWh battery storage system in Serbia.
The agreement initiates a structured financing process and due diligence aimed at securing long-term debt for the project, Fortis Energy said.
The company described the development as a potential milestone for regional energy security and decarbonisation, adding that the project is expected to become Serbia’s largest solar facility.
Located about 80 km northwest of Belgrade, Sremska Mitrovica is set to host one of the largest solar schemes in the Western Balkans.
Fortis said the project is expected to generate more than 365 GWh of electricity annually and avoid roughly 182,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Construction is planned to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with commissioning targeted for the first quarter of 2028.
