Wärtsilä has started construction of a 50MW/100MWh energy storage system for the Gramme 1 project in central-eastern Belgium, marking the company’s first participation in the country’s capacity remuneration mechanism (CRM).
The company said the order was booked in the second quarter of 2025 and the project is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2027.
The battery system will provide grid services including frequency and voltage management, supporting Belgium’s efforts to maintain system reliability as renewable penetration increases.
Guillaume Poncelet, managing director at Kallima Energies, said: “This project with Wärtsilä underscores our commitment to dependable, flexible energy in Belgium.”
He added: “By delivering essential ancillary services, the system will play a vital role in balancing the grid.”
David Hebert, vice president of global sales management at Wärtsilä Energy Storage, said the partnership reflects a shared focus on strengthening Belgium’s energy security and grid stability during the energy transition.
Gramme 1 will deploy Wärtsilä’s GridSolv Quantum2 system together with its GEMS control software under an engineered equipment delivery contract that includes a long-term service agreement.
