Ocean Winds has been granted a feasibility licence by the Australian Federal Government for the Westward Wind offshore project off Bunbury in Western Australia.
The proposed development has a planned capacity of up to 1.2GW. The feasibility licence covers an area of 206km² and allows the company to undertake detailed environmental, technical and commercial studies to assess project viability.
Westward Wind marks Ocean Winds’ second offshore wind project in Australia, following the 1.3GW High Sea Wind project in Gippsland, Victoria.
The company said the new project has been added to its global offshore wind development portfolio and represents a further step in expanding its presence in the Australian market.
Over its operational lifetime, Westward Wind is expected to avoid up to 24 million tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions, according to Ocean Winds.
The company added that the development will contribute to shaping Australia’s offshore wind sector as part of the country’s broader energy transition ambitions.
