Bute Energy has secured a 20-year Contract for Difference (CfD) for its 92-megawatt Twyn Hywel Energy Park, clearing a key milestone for the project, the company said.
Twyn Hywel will be Bute Energy’s first project to move into construction and is expected to begin generating electricity in late 2027. The project, which received planning consent in 2024, will comprise 14 turbines located on the border of Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf in south Wales.
Once operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 81,000 homes, Bute Energy said. The company added that the project supports its wider plan to invest about £3 billion to unlock more than 2.2 gigawatts of onshore wind capacity across Wales.
Bute Energy said the Twyn Hywel scheme places Caerphilly and south Wales at the centre of the region’s energy transition and reflects growing momentum for onshore wind development in Wales.
“We are delighted with the outcome of the Auction Round, securing a Contract for Twyn Hywel Energy Park,” said Martin Chown, interim chief executive of Bute Energy.
He added that onshore wind remains among the lowest-cost renewable technologies in the UK. “Onshore wind is one of the UK’s cheapest forms of renewable energy [and] can offer best value for money for billpayers,” Chown said.
Chown said Wales’ improved performance in the auction highlighted increased confidence from developers, investors and policymakers. He added that closer cooperation between industry and the Welsh government could help translate energy security goals into investment, jobs and community benefits.
