RWE has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon for 110MW of capacity from the Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, the companies said.
The deal builds on a strategic framework agreed in 2025 aimed at supporting Amazon’s carbon-free energy targets and RWE’s digital transformation. The partners said the contracted capacity is expected to generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of more than 139,000 German households each year.
Nordseecluster is located about 50 km north of the island of Juist and is being developed in two phases. Nordseecluster A, with 660MW of capacity, is due to enter operation in early 2027, while the 900MW Nordseecluster B phase is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2029.
The project is jointly owned by RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49%.
“Power Purchase Agreements like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long-term security of supply,” said Ulf Kerstin, chief commercial officer at RWE Supply & Trading.
Amazon, which has set a goal to reach net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040, said the agreement marks its fourth large-scale offshore wind PPA in Germany. The company already operates six onsite solar projects in the country.
Together, Amazon’s German renewable portfolio now totals more than 790MW across 10 projects, which the company said are expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1 million homes annually once fully operational.
“Germany is transitioning to an energy future that is modern and carbon-free, and this agreement with RWE helps advance that vision,” said Rocco Bräuniger, Amazon’s country manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Globally, Amazon has contracted more than 1GW of renewable capacity across multiple RWE projects. The latest agreement represents the first collaboration between the two companies outside the United States.
