SSE has appointed former Orsted and ACWA Power executive Thomas Brostrøm as managing director for business development, as the UK energy group strengthens its senior leadership team to support international expansion.
Brostrøm will join SSE on 1 April 2026 from Saudi renewables developer ACWA Power, bringing more than 15 years of international leadership experience across renewables, project development, investment and portfolio management, the company said. He previously led Orsted’s North America business before moving on to Shell.
In his new role, Brostrøm will oversee the development of international projects across SSE’s technologies through to final investment decision, with a focus on building and scaling businesses in both mature and emerging markets.
SSE said Brostrøm will be responsible for progressing projects to FID while helping expand the group’s global footprint.
The company has also appointed James Allen as chief procurement officer, effective 1 April 2026. Allen will join from GKN Aerospace, where he currently serves in the same role.
SSE said Allen brings experience in commercial strategy and multinational supply chain management, having led procurement transformations at asset-intensive organisations including Arriva and Babcock.
Allen will succeed Ronnie Fleming, who is set to retire in April 2027 after 16 years with the company and will support a transition over the coming year.
The appointments come as SSE advances its £33bn Transformation for Growth plan, aimed at scaling internationally, navigating complex supply chains and building infrastructure to support a net-zero energy system.
Brostrøm’s appointment reflects SSE’s ambition to accelerate project development globally, while Allen’s arrival is intended to strengthen procurement capabilities as the group expands its renewables and networks portfolio.
