UK energy storage developer Zenobē said it has begun commercial operations at its 300-megawatt/600-megawatt-hour Kilmarnock South battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scotland.
The project has entered service just under two years after reaching financial close and follows the commissioning of Zenobē’s 200-MW Blackhillock battery in March 2025, the company said. Kilmarnock South forms part of Zenobē’s £1 billion investment programme into battery storage and clean transport infrastructure in Scotland.
With the launch of Kilmarnock South, Zenobē’s operational battery capacity in the UK has reached 731 MW, with a further 568 MW/1,230 MWh currently under construction.
Located close to several offshore wind farms, the site will also provide grid Stability Services using grid-forming inverters. Zenobē said it is only the second battery project in the UK to deliver this capability, following Blackhillock.
Zenobē worked with Wärtsilä, which supplied its Quantum battery technology, Omexom for balance-of-plant works and EDF Energy as route-to-market partner. Kraken’s platform will be used to support energy trading operations. The company said it will continue engagement with the local community through a Community Benefit Fund administered by Foundation Scotland.
“Kilmarnock South is a landmark moment for Scotland – a world-first, subsidy-free battery that will reduce energy bills and strengthen Britain’s energy security,” said Zenobē founder and director James Basden.
“This battery will contribute towards ending the absurd waste of clean Scottish wind power,” Basden added, saying the project reflects Zenobē’s focus on using energy storage to help integrate more renewable generation into the power system.
