OnPath Energy has begun turbine installation work at its Mill Rig wind farm in South Lanarkshire, as deliveries of major components for the project move forward, the company said.
The 33.4-megawatt onshore wind project will use six N163/5.X turbines supplied by Germany’s Nordex Group. OnPath said deliveries are taking place overnight through December and into January, with pre-installation of components such as tower sections, nacelles, drive trains and hubs running in parallel to improve efficiency.
Delivery of the 80-metre blades — described by the company as the longest to be installed on UK wind turbines to date — is expected early next year, ahead of commissioning and energisation planned for the spring.
The wind farm will feature six turbines with tip heights of 199.5 metres and is expected to generate electricity equivalent to the annual needs of more than 45,000 homes, according to OnPath.
“Welcoming Nordex on site represents a key moment for Mill Rig,” said Martin Kellerman, construction director at OnPath Energy, citing the supplier’s experience in turbine delivery.
Nordex said the project will mark the first installation of its N163/5.X turbine in the UK. “We’re proud to be partnering once again with OnPath on the Mill Rig project,” said Danny Hasledine, Nordex Group’s sales director for the UK and Ireland.
Full turbine erection is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with completion targeted by the end of March and commissioning to follow. OnPath said the project includes a £5 million community benefit fund and forms part of its portfolio of 12 operational wind farms in the UK.
