A joint venture between Denmark’s NKT and Taiwan’s Walsin Lihwa has opened the country’s first offshore power cable factory in Kaohsiung, marking a step in efforts to localise components for Taiwan’s offshore wind sector.
The Walsin Energy Cable System (WECS) plant spans 231,000 square metres and includes a 50-metre extrusion tower. The facility will manufacture high- and medium-voltage AC submarine cables for the domestic offshore wind market, the companies said.
NKT chief executive Claes Westerlind said the project reflects a shared focus on supporting the region’s energy transition. “The achievement embodies a shared vision of accelerating the clean energy transition and strengthening critical infrastructure,” he said.
At the opening ceremony, WECS underscored the factory’s role in supporting Taiwan’s long-term renewable energy strategy. WECS chairman Yu-Lon Chiao said the partnership had enabled rapid delivery. “We are delighted to collaborate with NKT, whose leading technology and expertise – combined with our shared commitment to environmental, social, and corporate governance principles – have enabled us to successfully complete the construction of our submarine cable factory in record time,” he said. “This partnership represents a major milestone in Taiwan’s green energy transition and opens new opportunities for both parties across the Asia-Pacific market.”
Commercial production is expected to start in 2027 once type testing and pre-qualification processes are completed.
