SSE Renewables said it has reached final investment decisions to begin construction of 52 megawatts (MW) of new onshore wind capacity across three sites in Spain and Italy, expanding its southern European portfolio under construction to 133MW.
The new projects add to the company’s existing developments, including the 64MW Jubera wind farm in northern Spain and the 17MW Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva projects in southern Italy, both nearing completion.
In Spain, SSE Renewables will build the 23MW Portalrubio and 19MW Minguez wind farms in the Teruel region of Aragón. The two projects will feature seven Nordex Delta4000 turbines, manufactured at Nordex’s Barásoain facility in northern Spain, along with supporting infrastructure.
In Italy, work is already under way on the 10MW Tuturano Wind Farm in Puglia, near the company’s existing southern Italian sites. The project will comprise three Siemens Gamesa turbines.
Richard Cave-Bigley, director of onshore Europe at SSE Renewables, said the investments demonstrate the company’s disciplined approach to expanding its international operations.
“I’m delighted we’ve taken final investment decisions to commence construction on 52MW of new onshore wind capacity at sites in Spain and Italy,” Cave-Bigley said. “We’ve taken these investment decisions in line with SSE’s always disciplined approach to project delivery and adherence to strict hurdle rates as we selectively build out our international pipeline.”
He added that the new projects strengthen SSE’s position in key European renewable markets. “The addition of these projects in carefully selected markets grows our current portfolio of onshore wind projects in construction in southern Europe to 133MW,” he said.
SSE Renewables said construction of the Spanish sites would begin immediately, with turbine installation expected in 2026. The company added that the Jubera wind farm in La Rioja is nearing completion, and commissioning is soon to start at Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva in southern Italy.
Once operational, the new projects are expected to contribute to SSE’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy footprint across Europe and support regional clean energy goals.
