Orlen Group has completed preliminary seabed surveys for its planned Baltic East offshore wind farm in the Polish Baltic Sea, marking a key milestone in the project’s development, the company said on Monday.
The four-month survey campaign was carried out by a consortium of Polish firms — Orlen Petrobaltic, Geofizyka Torun, and MEWO — and covered more than 1,000 kilometres of seismic lines, along with detailed soundings and geotechnical boreholes.
Orlen Neptun president Janusz Bil said the studies represent “one of the key stages in developing our offshore wind farm project.” He added: “The work in the Baltic was carried out by a consortium of three Polish companies, which shows the growing readiness of the Polish supply chain to provide high-quality services to the offshore wind energy sector.”
The campaign began in late June and lasted more than 15 weeks, using three specialist vessels operating across the entire project area. Geofizyka Torun performed multichannel 2D seismic surveys, while MEWO conducted unexploded ordnance searches, identifying dozens of magnetic anomalies to ensure safe drilling. Orlen Petrobaltic carried out more than 1,200 metres of geotechnical boreholes and soundings, reaching depths of up to 80 metres below the seabed.
Bil said the work was completed “to the highest standards and best practices, keeping environmental impact to a minimum,” adding that the results will enable the project to “move efficiently into the next stages of delivery.”
Orlen said laboratory analysis of soil samples and interpretation of seismic data are now under way. The findings will inform design work, geological modelling, and future development planning for the Baltic East project, which already holds preliminary grid connection conditions and key construction permits.
The Baltic East wind farm is expected to have a capacity of close to 1 gigawatt (GW), enough to supply electricity to about 1.25 million homes. It will follow the 1.2GW Baltic Power project, which is scheduled to come online in 2026.
Together with four additional Baltic Sea licences, Orlen’s offshore wind portfolio totals approximately 6.4GW, contributing to the group’s target of 12.8GW of renewable capacity by 2035.
