Danish technology company Topsoe has inaugurated what it describes as Europe’s largest Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell (SOEC) manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark, the firm said on Thursday.
The 500MW plant will produce high-efficiency SOEC stacks intended for industrial-scale green hydrogen projects, with potential to scale further. Topsoe said the factory is its largest investment to date and is backed by €94 million from the EU Innovation Fund.
The company said the facility is designed to support decarbonisation in hard-to-abate industrial sectors, which contribute roughly 30% of global CO₂ emissions.
Morten Bodskov, Denmark’s minister for industry, business and financial affairs, said the inauguration was “a big day” for Herning and Denmark, adding that the factory “creates jobs, growth and a greener future.”
Roeland Baan, Topsoe’s CEO, said: “Our SOEC facility will be a game-changer for the energy transition. The technology’s unmatched efficiency is pivotal for scaling green hydrogen production for industrial decarbonization.”
The facility spans 23,000 square metres and is designed to support up to 10GW of installed capacity over the next decade, potentially reducing 15 million tonnes of CO₂ annually. Topsoe said offtake agreements are already in place with First Ammonia in Texas and Forestal in Spain.
