Offshore wind developer JERA Nex BP has announced it will close its U.S. operations and lay off staff in the coming months, citing the cancellation of its Beacon Wind project and a lack of viable market conditions.
In a statement, the company said it will no longer continue investing in the U.S. offshore wind sector for the time being but will retain the lease area associated with Beacon Wind off the coast of New England.
“The U.S. is a market with significant long-term potential for offshore wind, which we still believe can play a key role in the country’s energy transition,” the company said. “Unfortunately, in the present environment we see no viable path to the development of our Beacon Wind project.”
The company did not provide specific details on the number of employees affected but confirmed that U.S.-based staff will be laid off as part of the wind-down.
“We’re incredibly proud of the role our talented and committed team has played in the development of offshore wind in the U.S. and are disappointed by this outcome,” the developer added. “We will support them in this difficult transition.”
JERA Nex BP said it would continue to monitor market conditions and may resume development activity if the environment becomes more favourable.
