Kraftanlagen Energies & Services has been appointed to carry out Balance of Plant (BoP) works for the 100-megawatt Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub, a major electrolysis project being developed at the former Moorburg coal power plant site.
The hub, a joint venture between asset manager Luxcara and municipal utility Hamburger Energiewerke, is one of Germany’s first large-scale green hydrogen initiatives.
Under the contract, Kraftanlagen will plan, deliver and construct technical and supporting infrastructure, including systems for power distribution, water treatment, cooling, compressor stations, and connections to both the hydrogen network and trailer loading station.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with commissioning expected in the second half of 2027.
The new facilities will enable integration of a 100MW Siemens Energy electrolyser and support flexible hydrogen transport solutions. The 16,000-square-metre site began preparatory works in June, including subsoil stabilisation.
The project aims to produce up to 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for industrial and mobility customers via the HH-WIN distribution network and trailer-based delivery.
“Kraftanlagen’s expertise will help realise this pioneering project for Hamburg’s hydrogen economy,” said Holger Matthiesen, managing director at Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub and director of offshore wind and green hydrogen at Luxcara.
Heinrich Dauer, head of Kraftanlagen’s energy business unit, said the company is “proud to support the hub in implementing the project” and will leverage its power plant construction experience to ensure successful delivery.
Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
