Spanish energy companies Repsol and Forestalia are jointly developing one of the country’s largest hybrid energy projects in Aragon, combining 818 MW of gas-fired power with 805 MW of wind capacity across fifteen wind farms.
The project integrates Repsol’s combined cycle power plant in Escatron, Zaragoza, with wind farms acquired from Forestalia, which will continue overseeing their development until commissioning. The two energy sources will share a single grid connection point, enabling complementarity and optimising infrastructure use.
Repsol said the hybrid setup allows both gas and wind facilities to stabilise supply while sharing evacuation infrastructure, enhancing operational efficiency. The wind farms have received favourable Environmental Impact Statements and are currently in processing and development phases.
The project also supports the construction of a large data centre nearby, backed by a separate investor, with Repsol securing grid connection approval for 402 MW of renewable self-consumption complemented by over 800 MW of additional support energy.
Joao Costeira, executive managing director of low carbon generation at Repsol, said, “The project optimises the company’s renewable portfolio and enables the data centre to self-consume wind power.”
Forestalia’s director of wind and solar development, Fernando Samper Garcia, added, “This initiative strengthens our commitment to renewable energy in Aragon and offers an opportunity to deliver innovative solutions.”
The collaboration reflects a broader trend towards hybrid projects combining renewable and conventional generation to improve grid flexibility and accelerate decarbonisation efforts.
