Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul has signed a contract with Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) to install export cables for the 495-megawatt Formosa 4 offshore wind project in Taiwan, the company said on Thursday.
Under the agreement, Jan De Nul will transport, install, and protect approximately 60 kilometres of subsea high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables that will connect the wind farm to the onshore grid. The Formosa 4 site is located roughly 20 kilometres off the coast of Miaoli County in northwestern Taiwan.
Installation works are scheduled to begin in 2026 and continue into 2027. The company will use its cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh to carry out the works.
The Formosa 4 project will consist of 35 wind turbines and is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 500,000 homes, according to project developers.
Jan De Nul has also been named preferred contractor for the export cable installation at Formosa 6, another offshore wind project being developed by SRE, located 55 kilometres southwest of Formosa 4.
“With this new contract for Formosa 4 and our appointment as preferred contractor for Formosa 6, we continue our journey in Taiwan,” said Wouter Vermeersch, director of subsea cables offshore energy at Jan De Nul. “We are currently installing cables for the Greater Changhua 2b & 4 offshore wind farms, and preparing the installation of export cables for Fengmiao 1 in 2026. This provides us with a continuous project portfolio outlook in Taiwan through 2028.”
Vermeersch added that the company remains committed to supporting Taiwan’s renewable energy targets: “We have been at the forefront in supporting Taiwan towards its pathway to net-zero emissions in 2050.”
The announcement follows Jan De Nul receiving an award from the Belgian Embassy in Taiwan, recognising its long-term contribution to offshore wind development in the region. According to the embassy, trade between Belgium and Taiwan has more than doubled between 2020 and 2025.
