Energy and marine consultancy ABL has secured a contract to deliver marine warranty survey (MWS) services for the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), a major subsea electricity transmission project connecting Scotland and England.
The 2-gigawatt link will span approximately 505 kilometres, enabling high-capacity power transmission between Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and Drax in North Yorkshire. The project is designed to enhance energy security and support the UK’s renewable energy transition by increasing access to domestically generated green electricity.
Under the contract, ABL will provide technical review and approval of project documentation, engineering calculations, and procedural drawings. The company will also carry out vessel suitability surveys for the planned transportation and installation (T&I) operations, including Dynamic Positioning (DP) assurance where necessary.
ABL’s Aberdeen office will lead the project, with support from the consultancy’s MWS teams in Newcastle, London, and other European locations. On-site attendance during key operations is also part of the scope.
Ashley Perrett, ABL’s country manager in Scotland, said the project represents a critical step in strengthening the UK’s electricity network.
“EGL2 will bring UK-produced renewable energy to more households, better balancing energy supply with demand and significantly increasing the resilience of the network,” Perrett said. “We are proud to bring ABL’s expertise in MWS and interconnectors to support this key national initiative.”
Cable-laying operations are scheduled to begin in January 2028 and are expected to continue through September of the same year.
ABL is part of ABL Group ASA, a global consultancy listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.
