German renewables developer Energiekontor has sold the 18MW Würselen wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia to utility company SachsenEnergie, marking the first collaboration between the two firms.
The repowered site, located in the Aachen district, was commissioned in May 2025 and replaces three older 1.5MW GE turbines with three modern 6MW Vestas V150 units. Each turbine features a 125-metre hub height and a 150-metre rotor diameter.
According to Energiekontor, the wind farm is expected to generate approximately 41 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually—enough to supply around 12,500 households—while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 31,000 tonnes per year.
“Repowering wind parks is an important part of how Germany can achieve its expansion targets,” said Energiekontor CEO Peter Szabo. “With this transaction, working together for the first time, Energiekontor and SachsenEnergie are sending out a strong signal in favour of sustainable renewable energies.”
SachsenEnergie NaturKraft, a subsidiary of Dresden-based SachsenEnergie, has taken ownership of the wind farm. Energiekontor will continue to provide operational management and optimisation services for the site.
“We are delighted to be expanding our wind portfolio geographically with the Würselen wind park and diversifying into other wind regions with a new partner,” said SachsenEnergie CEO Frank Brinkmann.
Jens-Patric Hirtz, head of the NaturKraft unit, added: “We remain open to collaborations. These help us to consolidate our planned growth and diversify. However, it is important to us that we achieve this growth through our own projects.”
The sale is part of a broader trend for Energiekontor, which has sold five projects totalling 115MW so far this financial year, with additional transactions expected.
