The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to reclaim approximately $13 billion in unspent federal funds originally allocated under former President Joe Biden’s green investment initiatives.

The Department of Energy said the decision follows the enactment of the Working Families Tax Cut earlier this year, which included provisions to scale back unused federal expenditures and return unobligated funds to the U.S. Treasury.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the move reflects a broader policy shift toward fiscal restraint and a focus on domestic energy production.

“The American people elected President Trump largely because of the last administration’s reckless spending on climate policies that fed inflation and failed to provide any real benefit to the American people,” Wright said in a statement. “By returning these funds to the American taxpayer, the Trump administration is affirming its commitment to advancing more affordable, reliable and secure American energy and being more responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.”

The funds targeted for reallocation were part of various clean energy and climate-related programs introduced under the Biden administration, including grants and subsidies aimed at supporting renewable energy deployment and emissions reduction efforts.

While the exact breakdown of the reclaimed funding has not yet been detailed, the Energy Department said it would focus on unobligated balances across multiple programs that have not advanced to the implementation stage.

The announcement marks a further step in the Trump administration’s rollback of Biden-era climate policies, as officials emphasize cost control and energy affordability as key priorities ahead of the 2026 federal budget cycle.
