Belgian offshore contractor DEME, through its Taiwanese joint venture CDWE, has been awarded a transport and installation contract for the Formosa 4 offshore wind project, expanding its presence in Taiwan’s growing offshore wind market.
The contract, awarded by project developer Synera Renewable Energy, covers the installation of 35 foundations, the offshore substation, and scour protection works. Formosa 4 will be located approximately 20 kilometres off the coast of Miaoli County and is expected to have a capacity of 495 megawatts once operational.
DEME said the construction campaign will involve multiple vessels, including Green Jade, a floating installation unit owned and operated by CDWE and built in Taiwan. Scour protection will be executed by a rock placement vessel.
“The Formosa 4 contract builds on DEME’s strong track record in Taiwan,” said Frank Jonckheere, General Manager Asia-Pacific – Offshore Energy. “We are proud to play a significant role in advancing Taiwan’s clean energy transition and supporting its long-term vision for renewables.”
Subject to final investment decision, foundation installation is expected to begin in the first half of 2027.
DEME has been active in Taiwan’s offshore wind sector since 2019, when it co-founded CDWE. The joint venture has participated in several major projects in the region, including Zhong Neng, Changfang Xidao, Hai Long, and Greater Changhua.
“Through our joint venture CDWE, we provide integrated solutions that help our clients successfully develop their projects,” Jonckheere added. “In addition to bringing decades of knowledge and experience to Taiwan, we are nurturing local marine engineering talents and seafarers specialized in offshore wind who will help drive the industry forward for years to come.”
The Formosa 4 project is part of Taiwan’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
