French renewable energy developer Qair has launched all three floating foundations for its Eolmed floating wind pilot project at Port-La Nouvelle, marking a key milestone ahead of planned commissioning by the end of 2025.
The 30MW demonstrator project, located in the Mediterranean Sea, is now entering its final construction phase with offshore installation underway following the recent launch of floats and integration of wind turbines.
Backed by France’s Future Investment Programme (ADEME), the project is being developed by a consortium that includes TotalEnergies, BW Ideol, and a mix of public and private partners. Construction has been underway at the port’s industrial quay for nearly three years.
Qair said 80% of the construction costs have been awarded to French companies, describing the initiative as a strategic step toward building a domestic floating wind industry.
“With the Eolmed demonstrator entering its final phase, we are reaching a decisive milestone for the French floating wind industry,” said Laurent Vergnet, CEO of Eolmed. “Entrusting 80% of the construction costs to French companies demonstrates our commitment to combining industrial performance and energy sovereignty.”
Vergnet added: “Eolmed is paving the way for a new era of commercial projects and sustainable jobs on our coasts.”
The floats were manufactured by MP Archimedes, a joint venture between Matière and Ponticelli Frères, with contributions from European subcontractors including Brodosplit, Fincantieri, Navacel and Petrol Lavori.
Qair said Eolmed will serve as a reference project for upcoming commercial floating wind tenders in France and Europe, demonstrating the potential economic value for local supply chains and port infrastructure.
