The Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) has initiated a process to seek input from interested organizations regarding its progress. Launched in October 2022 by SolarPower Europe and Solar Energy UK, the SSI aims to ensure responsibility, transparency, and sustainability throughout the solar value chain.
The primary objective of the initiative is to establish mechanisms that collect and verify information on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of operators within the solar value supply chain. Independent auditors will monitor compliance with the specific ESG criteria outlined in the SSI Code.
Presently, the initiative collaborates with more than 60 organizations from the solar industry and receives support from sustainability experts and the international finance community.
Actors involved in the ESG field are invited to provide their feedback on the draft SSI Code and the further development of the initiative.
Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK, stated, “The commencement of this consultation signifies a crucial phase for the SSI as it progresses from a pilot phase to a fully operational system that will ensure the European solar industry adheres to appropriate standards.”
Walburga Hemetsberger, Chief Executive of SolarPower Europe, emphasized the commitment to transparency in building the Solar Stewardship Initiative. She said, “This public consultation is the next logical step in incorporating the perspectives of various stakeholders, including industry, civil society, and the ESG community.”
The consultation process complements ongoing discussions with sustainability experts and expands opportunities for interested parties to engage with the initiative.
The SSI is being established as a multi-stakeholder initiative with representatives from different stages of the value chain in the solar industry, civil society, affected communities, and independent ESG and standard-setting experts serving on its governing bodies.
The consultation will remain open until July 12th.
