Finnish state-owned enterprise Metsähallitus has appointed Arenso to carry out technical planning work for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme phase of the proposed Ebba offshore wind project in the Bay of Bothnia.
The design phase, set to begin this autumn, will focus on turbine placement and supporting marine infrastructure to facilitate the project’s EIA process.
The Ebba project, located in state-owned waters off the coast of Pyhäjoki and Raahe, is expected to have an installed capacity of up to 1.4 gigawatts, with electricity generation targeted for the 2030s.
“The Ebba project is an important step toward cleaner energy production. Arenso’s experience in technical design of offshore wind power brings strong expertise to the project,” said Sami Piippo, project director at Metsähallitus.
Arenso’s business director, Esa Holttinen, noted the company’s long-standing experience in the region. “Arenso and its predecessor Suomen Hyötytuuli have been developing offshore wind power concepts suitable for the icy conditions of the Baltic Sea for over two decades, and this expertise will now be applied in the planning of the Ebba project,” he said.
The project is part of Finland’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy production and utilise offshore wind resources in the Baltic Sea, particularly in areas with challenging weather and ice conditions.
