Two storage projects developed by Boralex with a combined nameplate capacity of 380MW have been chosen by the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) as part of its Expedited Long-Term Request for Proposals. Boralex, along with its partners Six Nations of the Grand River and the Walpole Island First Nation, are currently finalizing the contract terms with the IESO.
These two projects account for nearly half of the total capacity of 780MW selected, and one of them, the Hagersville Battery Storage Park with a nameplate capacity of 300MW, is the largest site chosen by the IESO.
Another project called the Tilbury Battery Storage Project, with an 80MW capacity and a four-hour duration, is being developed near existing Hydro One infrastructure in the Municipality of Lakeshore, Ontario.
Once operational, these projects will mark Boralex's first foray into storage facilities in Canada. Boralex's President and CEO, Patrick Decostre, expressed his views on the selection, stating, “Today's announcement is another significant milestone for Boralex as we look to expand our storage portfolio and meet the growth and diversification objectives of our 2025 strategic plan. These projects will help the province of Ontario achieve its energy capacity targets, promote the development of renewable energy, and enhance the stability of the provincial power system.”
