Renewable energy company Nadara has submitted a planning application to repower the Beinn Ghlas wind farm in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, with plans to replace older infrastructure with more efficient modern turbines and significantly increase the site’s output.
The proposal includes the removal of 14 existing turbines and installation of up to seven new units, each with a maximum tip height of 149.9 metres. The planned upgrade would raise the site’s generation capacity from 8.4 megawatts (MW) to between 30MW and 40MW.
“Modernising our existing portfolio is crucial for preserving and enhancing clean electricity capacity,” said Nadara development manager Karl Parker. “Working in partnership with a diverse team of subject matter experts, I was proud to contribute to the successful submission of the Beinn Ghlas repowering.”
According to Nadara, the repowering is expected to enhance financial contributions to local communities, with annual community benefit funding potentially reaching around £168,000. The company said it is exploring options to expand the reach of the benefit fund geographically and may include electricity bill support for residents.
“Beinn Ghlas Wind Farm has been a proud part of Argyll and Bute’s renewable energy landscape for more than 26 years,” said external project manager Joanna Thornton. “This repowering project not only secures its future but ensures that the benefits to local communities will grow substantially.”
An Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR), prepared by consultant RSK and its partners, has been made available for public review on the project’s dedicated website: www.beinnghlasrepowering.co.uk.
Nadara has invited local suppliers to register their interest in participating in the development, construction, or operational stages of the proposed project.
