Austrian utility Wien Energie has announced plans to acquire full ownership of renewables developer ImWind, in a move intended to strengthen its role in the country’s energy transition and expand domestic wind and solar capacity.
The companies said the planned acquisition aims to ensure a more independent and sustainable energy supply for Austria, while accelerating the rollout of renewable infrastructure.
“With the acquisition of ImWind, we are securing valuable know-how and decades of experience in the development of wind and solar parks,” Wien Energie said in a joint statement with ImWind.
ImWind, which has offices in Vienna, Pottenbrunn and Mainz, has been active in renewable energy project development, construction and operations for 30 years. It currently operates 52 wind turbines across 14 wind farms and four solar farms.
Wien Energie said that following the transaction, ImWind will remain an independent entity on the market, continuing to operate with its team of around 100 employees. All turbines in its fleet will remain under ImWind’s operational control.
The completion of the transaction is subject to approval by competition authorities.
Austria is aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, with electricity demand projected to rise significantly in the coming years. This is expected to require a major expansion in wind and solar capacity.
Wien Energie currently operates 500 solar installations, 88 hydroelectric plants, and 106 wind turbines. The company had previously acquired several renewable assets from ImWind, including the Mönchhof wind farm.
The two companies said the acquisition will combine their expertise to support Austria’s renewable energy targets.
