The U.S. Department of Commerce has broadened the scope of Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminium to cover 407 additional product categories, including wind turbine components, mobile cranes, and industrial equipment.
The newly included items are now subject to a 50% duty rate, following recent proclamations by President Donald Trump that removed certain exemptions and doubled the tariff rate from 25% to 50%. The move is part of a wider effort to address duty evasion and strengthen domestic metal industries.
“Today’s action expands the reach of the steel and aluminum tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention – supporting the continued revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries,” said Jeffrey Kessler, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security.
The expanded list includes products such as bulldozers, railcars, compressors, and pumps. The Commerce Department established a formal process in May to assess which derivative products could be added to the tariffs, allowing for three public submission windows each year.
The next submission period will open in September and be announced in the Federal Register. A full list of the 407 affected product categories is included in the annex to the latest notice.
