Renewable energy developer Galileo Empower has submitted a planning application for a 476-megawatt wind farm extension and biodiversity plan in northeast Scotland, as part of efforts to support the country’s energy transition.
The proposed Dorenell Extension project includes 67 wind turbines ranging in height from 149.9 to 250 metres, as well as a battery storage facility. The site is located on the Cabrach and Glenfiddich Estate, approximately 10 kilometres south of Dufftown.
The Edinburgh-based project team said the application follows two rounds of public consultation held in 2024 and 2025, with community feedback reflected in the final design.
“Our submission of the formal application represents a major milestone for the whole project, and we are delighted to have met and discussed the project with so many local people as part of our extensive consultation,” said Jason Morin, senior project manager at Galileo. “Our ambition has always been to be a good neighbour to adjacent communities.”
If approved, the project is expected to contribute to regional economic development and local job creation during construction and operation. The company has pledged to prioritise local supply chains where possible and to provide £5,000 per megawatt of installed capacity annually in community benefit, in line with Scottish Government guidance.
Galileo is also exploring options for community part-ownership of the project, working with Local Energy Scotland to engage residents in the process.
The Dorenell Extension forms part of Galileo’s broader renewable energy portfolio aimed at supporting Scotland’s net-zero targets.
