Iberdrola has taken delivery of the final batch of XXL monopiles for its 315MW Windanker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, marking a key milestone in the project’s development, the company said on Wednesday.
The monopiles were manufactured by Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables at their joint facility in Fene, northern Spain. The components are part of a second major supply contract with Iberdrola, following earlier deliveries for the East Anglia 3 project in the UK.
Each monopile measures up to 84 metres in length, 10 metres in diameter, and weighs up to 2,100 tonnes. Their production supported around 300 jobs and formed part of a broader strategic collaboration between Iberdrola and the Navantia-Windar alliance, which spans a decade and exceeds €1 billion in value.
“This delivery is another example of Iberdrola’s driving vocation with the Spanish industrial fabric. We always seek to develop all our projects in partnership with local industry and Spanish companies,” said Álvaro Martínez, Iberdrola’s offshore wind director.
Navantia chairman Ricardo Domínguez noted the longstanding cooperation with Iberdrola, stating: “Last December, Navantia celebrated a decade of offshore wind since its first contract with Iberdrola. Since then, we have supplied offshore foundations and substations for its wind farms, helping to strengthen the national supply chain.”
Windar Renovables executive chairman Orlando Alonso added: “This order from Iberdrola is evidence of the high level of quality of our products and the reliability of our processes and our collaboration with Navantia Seanergies.”
To accommodate the large-scale production, the Fene facility underwent a €36 million upgrade, including a new warehouse, high-capacity bending machinery, painting booths, and improved storage areas.
The Windanker project will feature turbines rated at approximately 15MW each and is scheduled to be operational in 2026. It forms part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Sea hub, alongside the 350MW Wikinger and 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farms.
Separately, Navantia and Windar are currently manufacturing 45 monopiles for the East Anglia 3 project, while Windar is also supplying 95 transition pieces from its Avilés facility in Asturias.
Iberdrola currently has over 2,470MW of offshore wind capacity installed and aims to expand this to 6,500MW by 2030.
