Vestas and Nippon Steel Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on supplying steel for wind turbine towers across Europe, Asia, and Japan, the companies said on Thursday.
The agreement, signed in Tokyo in the presence of Japan’s Vice-Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry, Mr. Matsuo, aims to support the growth of domestic wind projects and reinforce international supply chains.
Steel for the towers will be sourced from Nippon Steel’s East Japan Works in Kimitsu and Kyushu Works in Oita, according to the partners.
Under the MoU, Vestas and Nippon Steel plan to jointly pursue global business opportunities in the wind energy sector.
Separately, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Vestas have launched a public-private cooperation framework to boost domestic wind power development and manufacturing. This initiative targets long-term investment and supply chain stability, including the participation of Japanese companies in the Vestas supply chain and increased local production of key components.
METI said the collaboration “aims to support the large-scale, stable introduction of wind energy in Japan and build a resilient domestic wind turbine manufacturing base.
