German energy company Enertrag has acquired a site in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, for the construction of a 130-megawatt (MW) green hydrogen production facility, as part of the European Union’s Hy2Infra funding programme.
The project is expected to produce up to 12,500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using 100% renewable electricity. The hydrogen will be fed into the FLOW pipeline—part of Germany’s national hydrogen core network—and supplied to industrial sectors including steel, cement, glass and fertiliser.
“By securing the site in Prenzlau, we are creating the conditions for industrial, green hydrogen production directly at the source of renewable energy,” said Matthias König of Enertrag. “The project shows how municipal co-operation and industrial innovation can work together to actively shape change – ecologically, economically and socially.”
The hydrogen plant will be housed within an existing industrial facility, with a total investment estimated at €300 million. Enertrag said the project will create up to 25 new jobs and is expected to contribute significantly to local tax revenues.
Mayor Hendrik Sommer welcomed the development, citing its broader benefits to the community. “Prenzlau combines progress and development with renewable energies. The fact that Enertrag is developing the local location is a positive sign for our city,” he said. This further development will allow Enertrag to grow, from which numerous social projects in the city and the region will certainly benefit in the future thanks to active corporate commitment.
Enertrag’s initiative reflects a growing focus on integrating renewable hydrogen production into local and national energy infrastructure as Germany works to reduce industrial emissions and enhance energy independence.
