Cambridge Power has sold a co-located solar and battery energy storage project in Bedfordshire, England, to AGR Renewables, as part of ongoing efforts to expand renewable infrastructure in the UK.
The ready-to-build project includes a 49.9 megawatt (MW) solar farm and a 100MW battery energy storage system (BESS), located adjacent to the Eaton Socon substation. Construction is expected to begin in August.
Planning approval for the BESS was granted in 2023, followed by consent for the solar installation in early 2025. The development includes landscape and ecological enhancements, with the solar component expected to deliver a biodiversity net gain of over 100%, and the BESS projected to contribute a 71% gain.
“This is an exceptionally well-located and well-planned solar and battery scheme which has been developed by Cambridge Power over the last five years,” said Richard Stanton, chairman of Cambridge Power. “It will provide an important contribution to the transition to net zero and the Government’s Clean Power 2030 objectives.”
AGR Renewables will take over construction and long-term operation of the project. The company is targeting 500MW of operational solar and 1GWh of battery storage assets by the end of 2026.
“The acquisition of Eaton Socon marks a significant milestone in AGR’s growth story,” said Oliver Breidt, founder of AGR Renewables. “The assets complement AGR’s existing pipeline and further consolidate the company’s position as one of the fastest growing renewable energy developers in the country.”
Cambridge Power, part of the Pigeon Group, has secured planning approvals for 750MW of renewable projects since 2019 and is currently developing a pipeline exceeding 1GW across the UK. The sale follows its divestment of a 29.9MW battery storage scheme in Rutherglen, Scotland, to FTSE-250 investor NextEnergy in late 2024.
