Danish cable manufacturer NKT has signed new multi-year framework agreements with German utility EnBW to supply power cables that will support grid reinforcement and renewable energy integration across southern Germany, the companies said on Thursday.
Under the agreements, NKT will deliver a wide range of low-voltage (1kV) and medium-voltage (10–30kV) power cables from its production facilities in Kladno and Velke Meziříčí in the Czech Republic. The initial term of the agreements is three years, with an option to extend for an additional two years.
The agreements are part of EnBW’s broader investment strategy to modernise Germany’s electricity infrastructure as the country accelerates its energy transition. Headquartered in Karlsruhe, EnBW supplies over 5.5 million customers and aims to generate up to 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with a target of climate neutrality by 2035.
“Germany’s energy transition is progressing at pace, and we are proud to continue our partnership with EnBW in delivering the power cables necessary,” said Carlos Fernandez, Executive Vice President and Head of Applications at NKT. “With more than 25 years of collaboration, we share a strong commitment to building a reliable and sustainable electricity grid for the future.”
The supplied cables will play a key role in supporting grid expansion, reinforcing distribution networks, and connecting decentralised renewable energy assets such as solar, wind and battery storage systems.
“Germany’s energy transition is no longer just about adding more renewables,” Fernandez added. “It is about re-engineering the grid to handle the complexity of two-way power flows from decentralised sources. A modern, flexible network is essential not only for meeting national climate goals, but also for reinforcing Germany’s role as a critical hub in the wider European energy system.”
EnBW plans to invest €40 billion through the end of the decade, with a strong focus on grid infrastructure to support its decarbonisation strategy.
