Wind energy accounted for a record share of Ireland’s electricity generation in June, meeting 30% of national demand, according to the latest monthly report from Wind Energy Ireland (WEI).
The report marks the highest level of wind generation recorded in any June, surpassing figures from the same month in 2024. It also noted a strong performance from solar farms, which similarly hit a monthly record.
“Our members provided nearly a third of Ireland’s electricity during the first half of 2025 and last month was a particularly strong June month for renewable energy generation,” said WEI chief executive Noel Cunniffe.
Total electricity demand in June rose to 3,151 gigawatt hours (GWh), compared to 3,019GWh during the same month last year. Wind energy supplied 939GWh, up from 771GWh in June 2024, according to data compiled from EirGrid, ElectroRoute, MullanGrid, and Green Collective.
The report also highlighted regional contributions, with wind farms in County Kerry generating the most electricity in June at 105GWh, followed by Cork (83GWh), Mayo (65GWh), Galway (64GWh), and Offaly (61GWh).
Cunniffe emphasised wind energy’s role in supporting domestic energy security. “Our wind farms are Ireland’s leading source of renewable electricity, playing a key role in reducing our dependency on imported fossil fuels,” he said.
The average wholesale electricity price in June fell for the fifth consecutive month to €95.21 per megawatt-hour (MWh), the lowest recorded since April 2024 and the first time this year the figure has dropped below €100. On high-wind days, average prices dropped to €67.15/MWh, while days dominated by fossil fuel generation saw prices rise to €115.06/MWh.
“Affordability is critically important to Irish families and businesses,” Cunniffe added. “Since 2000, renewable energy has saved electricity consumers nearly €1 billion according to recent research by Baringa.”
He also reiterated the sector’s call for faster development. “To meet the needs of our growing economy, we need to accelerate the delivery of new wind farms and we are committed to working with the Government to help make this happen,” he said.
