Polish renewable energy developer R Power plans to build a 55 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic project in north-west Romania, the company said on Monday.
The Lazuri solar farm will be located in Satu Mare County and is expected to generate around 70 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually once operational, enough to supply over 48,000 households. The project is scheduled to begin construction in the third quarter of 2025, with grid connection targeted for the third quarter of 2026.
The facility will be connected to Romania’s national grid through a new 110kV loop-in/loop-out switching station, which will be integrated into the existing Vetiș–Abator overhead transmission line.
“This project not only supports Romania’s ambitious renewable energy targets but also marks a strategic milestone in strengthening our presence in key Eastern European markets,” said Katarzyna Suchcicka, vice president of R Power.
The Lazuri project was among four R Power developments awarded 15-year Contracts for Difference (CfDs) in Romania’s recent renewable energy auction, representing a combined total of 85MWp.
R Power has been expanding its presence in Romania’s clean energy sector. The company previously secured €12.4 million in project financing from Poland’s BGK bank for a 23MWp solar portfolio, and obtained €15 million in non-reimbursable funding from Romania’s Ministry of Energy to support its first energy storage facility.
The company said the Lazuri project would help reduce carbon emissions by nearly 17,000 tonnes annually, aligning with both Romanian and EU decarbonisation goals.
