DNV has been selected by Ventyr to certify the design of the Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind farm, marking a significant development in Norway’s renewable energy sector.
The certification agreement encompasses both the wind turbines and offshore substation for the 1500MW project, which is located in the southern North Sea near the maritime boundary with Denmark. The Sørlige Nordsjø II site spans 520 square kilometres and is situated approximately 200 kilometres off Norway’s southwest coast.
According to DNV, the scope of work involves verifying the structural integrity of key components to ensure they meet both Norwegian regulations and international standards.
“Sørlige Nordsjø 2 marks a historic step forward for Norway’s offshore wind ambitions,” said Ventyr project director Wim Verrept. “Robust certification is essential to delivering safe and sustainable offshore wind infrastructure, and DNV’s experience and technical rigour make them a natural partner for this landmark development.”
DNV executive vice president for renewables certification, Kim Sandgaard-Mørk, described the project as a milestone for the country’s energy transition. “DNV has been closely following the development of offshore wind in Norway and is actively supporting Norwegian authorities and regulators with technical insight and guidance,” he said.
Principal engineer and project manager Anne Lene Haukanes Hopstad added that the certification process will help ensure the infrastructure is suited to the demanding conditions of the North Sea.
DNV’s recent North Sea Outlook Report projects that the region could host more than 150 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2050.
