The 250-megawatt Fairbanks Solar Energy Center in Sullivan County, Indiana, has entered commercial operation, developer Invenergy announced.
The project, which is capable of powering over 50,000 homes, was developed and constructed by Invenergy before being acquired by Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). The Fairbanks site becomes the second solar facility in Indiana developed by Invenergy and is among several projects the company is pursuing across the state.
Construction of the facility created approximately 275 local jobs. Invenergy Services will handle operations and maintenance, employing four full-time staff at the site. Over the course of its lifespan, the project is expected to bring more than $125 million in investment to the local community.
“We’re proud to have partnered with NIPSCO and the local community to bring Fairbanks Solar online,” said Michael Kaplan, senior vice president of development at Invenergy.
NIPSCO president Vince Parisi emphasized the importance of energy diversification. “Reliable and cost-effective power sources are essential to Indiana’s energy future,” Parisi said.
Local officials highlighted the economic impact of the project. “Invenergy’s projects help fund county services and support local development,” said Sullivan County commissioner Bob Davis.
The facility forms part of NIPSCO’s broader efforts to transition toward more renewable energy sources in its portfolio.
