The jacket foundation for the Thor offshore substation, part of Denmark’s largest wind project under construction, has been successfully rolled out at HSM Offshore Energy’s yard, marking a key milestone, the company said on Monday.
HSM Offshore Energy described the moment as a “proud moment for the entire team” as the platform was placed on a barge at its Schiedam facility. The next step in the project will involve the load-out of the substation topside.
The Thor offshore wind farm, being developed by RWE, is located approximately 22 kilometres off the coast of Thorsminde on Denmark’s west coast of Jutland. It will comprise 72 Siemens Gamesa turbines with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW).
The project includes two substations—one offshore and one onshore—to connect the wind farm to Denmark’s electrical grid. HSM Offshore Energy is handling the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning of the offshore high-voltage substation and its jacket foundation.
Once operational in 2027, Thor is expected to supply renewable electricity to 1.5 million Danish households.
The wind farm is jointly owned by RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Management Investment with 49%. RWE will lead construction and ongoing operations throughout the project’s lifecycle.
