WindEurope has welcomed the European Commission’s updated state aid rules, saying the measures will support industrial decarbonisation and increase demand for wind energy across the continent.
The Clean Industrial State Aid Framework (CISAF), adopted by the Commission, enables EU member states to offer targeted national support for clean technologies, including power purchase agreements (PPAs) and electrified heat processes.
“The new rules will help Europe’s heavy industry run on electricity rather than fossil fuels,” said Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope.
The updated framework also prioritises capital expenditure support for clean-tech manufacturing and simplifies approval for aid related to grid infrastructure and repowering of renewable assets.
According to WindEurope, PPAs supported under the new rules would “guarantee the electricity is renewable,” helping to unlock additional wind capacity across Europe.
The organisation added that repowering assistance could significantly increase energy output from existing wind sites while reducing the number of turbines by around 25%.
The revised state aid rules will remain in place until 2030, providing long-term certainty for investors and developers.
