Energy storage companies BW ESS and Ibersun have signed a joint venture agreement to develop utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Spain, targeting a combined capacity of 2.2 gigawatts.
The partnership aims to advance eight greenfield BESS projects, each with a four-hour duration, supporting Spain’s expanding energy storage market. The country’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan sets a target of 22.5 GW of storage capacity by 2030, driven by increasing solar and wind power generation and limited interconnection with neighbouring European grids.
“These projects will help improve Spain’s grid resilience and reduce energy waste when supply exceeds demand,” the companies said.
Isaac Garcia Moreno, executive director at BW ESS, said: “We are proud to be developing our first projects in Spain with Ibersun, a trusted partner with over 25 years of market experience. Recent events have underlined that there’s no time to waste in working towards these goals, and we look forward to applying a wealth of experience drawn from multiple global markets to the Spanish context.”
Ibersun, based in the Basque Country and founded in 2019, brings extensive experience in renewable energy development in Spain. In a joint statement, Ibersun directors Javier Arkotxa and Jose Antonio Gutiérrez said: “Spain is one of the largest markets for BESS and our joint venture with a global leader like BW ESS is going to help us in our efforts to continue developing the country’s energy potential.”
The partners expect each project to reach ready-to-build status within two years and plan to explore a diverse range of revenue strategies. The joint venture projects will be equally owned by BW ESS and Ibersun.
