Orange and Rockland Utilities, in collaboration with Convergent Energy and Power, proudly announces the successful implementation of a groundbreaking 12 MW/57 MWh battery storage system in Warwick, N.Y. This cutting-edge project marks one of the earliest instances of a non-wires alternative initiative in Orange County.
Convergent Energy and Power, entrusted with the design, construction, and ongoing operation of the system, has effectively delivered a solution that will benefit a staggering 7,500 O&R customers.
After a rigorous competitive bidding process, O&R opted for Convergent's expertise to enhance capacity at its Wisner substation. The battery storage system has been meticulously engineered to complement the existing electric supply during peak-demand days and provide crucial backup support to the substation. Moreover, as the landscape of wholesale and retail energy markets evolves, Convergent has strategic plans to capitalize on power sales within those markets, further driving down the overall system cost.
Comprising of three distinct 4 MW battery storage systems, the remarkable 12 MW array will seamlessly integrate with O&R's distribution network via the utility's overhead lines. This innovative endeavor is poised to enable O&R to defer the construction of new infrastructure required to accommodate surges in energy demand.
