The Port Authority of Bilbao has approved a 128,668-square-metre expansion of Haizea Bilbao’s concession, significantly increasing the company’s dockside footprint as it ramps up offshore wind manufacturing activities.
The additional space spans Docks AZ-2 and AZ-3, adjacent to Haizea Bilbao’s existing site, and brings the company’s total concession area within the port to approximately 340,000 square metres. Haizea Bilbao, part of the Haizea Wind Group, specialises in the production of offshore wind towers and foundations and has invested more than €300 million in its facilities since launching operations in 2018.
The move forms part of a broader phased growth strategy aligned with the Port of Bilbao’s ambition to position itself as a key logistics and manufacturing hub for the offshore wind industry.
The newly allocated land was previously occupied by Servicios Logísticos Portuarios (SLP) and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Eólica. Both companies have relocated within the port under a reorganisation plan aimed at optimising space for expanding industrial activities.
Haizea Bilbao operates within a cluster of wind energy firms located in the port, including Euskalforging, Forjas de Iraeta, Laulagun, Navacel, Nordex Acciona, Sakana, Siemens Gamesa and Vicinay Cadenas. These companies benefit from Bilbao’s infrastructure, which facilitates the direct export of large-scale turbine components.
The port’s hinterland also supports a wide network of wind sector companies across the value chain, with local manufacturing of components such as rotors, nacelles and electrical systems.
The Port Authority said the expansion reinforces Bilbao’s role in the offshore wind supply chain as demand for renewable infrastructure accelerates across Europe.
