Equinor and Polish energy firm Polenergia have submitted a pre-qualification application for their Bałtyk 1 offshore wind project to Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office, aiming to participate in the country’s first competitive offshore wind auction scheduled for December 17, 2025.
The submission marks the first official application for the upcoming auction, which forms part of Poland’s second phase of offshore wind development. With a potential installed capacity of up to 1,560 megawatts, Bałtyk 1 is currently the largest planned offshore wind project in the country.
Located approximately 81 kilometers off the Polish coast on the Central Bank area of the Baltic Sea, the wind farm is expected to consist of up to 104 turbines and could generate enough electricity to power around 2 million households.
“This is a true milestone not just for our teams, but for Poland’s energy security and the ongoing transformation of the energy system,” said Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk, Equinor’s country manager for Poland. “Bałtyk 1 is ready to compete in this groundbreaking process, paving the way for the most effective offshore projects to shape our future energy mix.”
Participation in the auction requires applicants to pass a pre-qualification process overseen by the Energy Regulatory Office (URE). The Bałtyk 1 project is the third offshore wind development in the Polish Baltic Sea being advanced by the Equinor-Polenergia partnership, following Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3. The combined capacity of the three projects is expected to reach 3 gigawatts.
Poland’s offshore wind auction is seen as a key step in its efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
