UK-based energy developer Balance Power has received planning approval for a 30-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, the company said on Wednesday.
The facility, expected to be operational by 2028, is designed to support the UK’s transition to net-zero emissions by providing grid balancing services that help manage the intermittent output of renewable energy sources.
The installation will include 12 battery units with a total storage capacity of two hours, contributing to greater flexibility and resilience in the national electricity network.
“Securing planning approval for this project marks another important milestone in our mission to deliver cleaner and more flexible energy infrastructure across the UK,” said Lois Gale, Design Lead at Balance Power.
The company also confirmed that the project will incorporate measures to enhance the local environment. The development is expected to result in a 34.82% increase in habitat units and a 16.44% rise in hedgerow units, contributing to regional biodiversity goals. At the end of its operational life, the site will be decommissioned and fully restored to its original state.
“We’re thankful for the constructive dialogue we’ve had with residents and council members to help ensure our Rochdale facility will bolster national energy security while delivering meaningful environmental and economic benefits for the local community,” Gale added.
Since 2017, Balance Power has secured planning consent for 37 energy projects, with a development pipeline exceeding 2 gigawatts (GW), according to company figures.
