Spanish renewables developer Grenergy has signed an agreement with BYD Energy Storage for the supply of 3,500 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage systems for the sixth phase of the Oasis de Atacama project in northern Chile.
The deal, which Grenergy described as the largest between the two companies to date, will support the Elena plant—a key component of the broader Oasis de Atacama initiative. With 446 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and 3.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery storage, the plant is expected to play a significant role in regional energy stability.
According to Grenergy, the agreement represents the largest battery supply project in Latin America and the second largest globally.
“This agreement marks the largest collaboration between the two companies to date, strengthening their strategic alliance within one of the world’s most significant energy storage projects,” Grenergy said in a statement.
Under the agreement, BYD will deliver 6,240 units of its MC Cube-T model—equivalent to 624 containerized systems—featuring Blade Battery technology. Grenergy highlighted the batteries’ safety, durability and efficiency as key factors for deployment in the Atacama Desert, known for its demanding environmental conditions.
The latest phase builds on previous agreements covering the first three stages of Oasis de Atacama, bringing the total contracted storage volume between Grenergy and BYD to 6.5 GWh.
The Oasis de Atacama project is one of the most ambitious solar-plus-storage developments in the world and aims to help address grid intermittency and support Chile’s transition to a more sustainable energy mix.
