Norway’s Equinor and Poland’s Polenergia have made final investment decisions for the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind projects, a joint venture with a planned total capacity of 1,440 megawatts (MW), the companies said on Tuesday.
The wind farms, to be located in Poland’s Exclusive Economic Zone in the Baltic Sea, represent one of the largest planned renewable energy developments in the country, with a total investment of approximately 27 billion Polish zlotys (€6.4 billion), excluding financing costs.
Each wind farm will feature 50 turbines, with a total of 100 units installed across both sites. The turbines, each standing 260 metres tall, are designed to generate enough energy per rotor rotation to power a Polish household for up to four days.
Combined, Bałtyk 2 and 3 are expected to supply renewable energy to over 2 million households annually.
“The Bałtyk offshore wind farm project is a huge investment, but also a prime example of how, thanks to perseverance, commitment and a strong Polish-Norwegian partnership, the bold idea from many years ago… is finally becoming reality before our eyes,” said Dominika Kulczyk, chairwoman of Polenergia’s supervisory board.
The wind farms are scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2028.
Located approximately 37 km and 22 km off the Polish coast, the projects will include Poland’s largest offshore substations—each with 720 MW capacity—as well as two onshore substations connected by 14 km of underground cabling.
Michel Jerzy Kołodziejczyk, Equinor’s country manager in Poland, said the projects mark a significant milestone for the region’s energy infrastructure.
“Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 represent some of the largest infrastructure projects in Poland’s history,” he said. “Their execution will significantly enhance the country’s energy security and independence while creating jobs in a developing sector.”
The projects will operate under 25-year Contracts for Difference (CfD) and are engineered for a lifespan of 30 years.
Kołodziejczyk added that the developments are part of a long-term strategy to establish a sustainable wind energy sector in the Baltic region. “As the future operator of these wind farms, we are proud to take this pivotal step… Together, we will strive for the safe and effective construction and operation of the Bałtyk 2 and 3 wind farms.”
