German offshore wind fabricator Steelwind has completed its largest and heaviest monopile to date, highlighting the growing scale of infrastructure required for next-generation offshore wind projects.
The completed foundation component measures approximately 115 metres in length and weighs around 2,200 tonnes, making it not only the largest and heaviest monopile Steelwind has produced, but also one of the largest of its kind in Europe, according to the company.
“With a length of around 115 metres and a weight of around 2200 tonnes, this monopile is not only the largest and heaviest that Steelwind has ever produced, but also one of the largest and heaviest monopiles ever produced in Europe,” a Steelwind spokesperson said.
Further monopiles of similar size are expected to follow as production continues at the company’s Nordenham-Blexen facility in northern Germany.
The milestone comes amid a broader expansion effort. In February, Steelwind announced a €50 million investment to upgrade and enlarge its manufacturing facilities, enabling the company to produce monopiles with diameters of up to 11.5 metres by the second half of 2026.
The company’s order backlog is currently filled through 2030, reflecting rising demand for offshore wind components as European countries accelerate efforts to expand renewable energy capacity.
“We are delighted about this fantastic milestone and are proud to be able to contribute to another great project,” the spokesperson added. “Many thanks to everyone involved for their outstanding work and commitment.
