OX2 has submitted the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for its Laine offshore wind project to Finnish authorities, marking a key milestone for the proposed development. Located approximately 30 kilometers off the coast, the Laine project could feature up to 150 turbines, generating an estimated 11 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean electricity annually.
The Laine project is being developed by OX2 in partnership with Ingka Investments, the investment arm of the Ingka Group, which is the largest operator of IKEA stores worldwide.
OX2 stated that the EIA provides new insights into previously unexplored marine areas within Finland’s exclusive economic zone. The assessment includes extensive studies ranging from seafloor mapping to the integration of hydrogen infrastructure, as part of the broader evaluation of the project’s environmental impacts.
According to OX2, the Laine offshore wind farm is poised to play a critical role in Finland’s transition to a carbon-neutral energy system. With the country’s electricity demand expected to double by 2035, the Laine project is positioned to contribute significantly toward achieving Finland’s energy independence and carbon neutrality goals.
The company’s spokesperson highlighted that the project’s potential to generate substantial clean energy aligns with Finland’s ambitions for a sustainable and secure energy future.
