German energy company RWE has commenced construction of a new onshore wind farm near Papenhagen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, aiming to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio in the region.
The project, located close to the town of Grimmen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, will consist of four wind turbines with a combined installed capacity of 22.8 megawatts. The development follows RWE’s successful bid in the Federal Network Agency’s auction at the end of last year.
Commissioning of the turbines is scheduled for mid-2026. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 20,000 households annually with renewable power.
In addition to the four turbines, RWE is constructing a fifth turbine in the same area on behalf of a project partner.
Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the project is part of a broader effort to accelerate wind energy deployment across Germany.
“We are continuing to accelerate the expansion of wind energy in Germany and expanding our wind fleet in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania,” Wünschel said. “The local people also benefit from this.”
As part of its community engagement strategy, RWE will make voluntary payments to surrounding municipalities. The company plans to contribute 0.2 euro cents per kilowatt hour of electricity produced at the site. For the Papenhagen wind farm, this could amount to annual payments of up to €130,000.
The new development adds to RWE’s growing presence in Germany’s renewable sector as the company works toward national and European clean energy goals.
